Prayer

April 18, 2013

Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns.
— Deuteronomy 24:14

Africa
  • Praise God for justice in Kampala: Two Ugandan men were convicted for assaulting their brother in an attempt to throw him from land that they all inherited from their father. Pray that the court’s ruling would bring peace and unity back to the family. Pray also that the police and government officials in Uganda would make ending the violent crime of property grabbing a priority. (Watch this video from IJM Kampala to learn more about property grabbing.)
Latin America
  • Ask God to grant Salma* and her mother boldness and courage as they testify about the abuse Salma endured from her alleged abuser, her father. Pray that the home where Salma and her two brothers live would become a place of safety and peace, where Salma can find restoration and healing. Finally, pray for the IJM Guatemala team providing counseling for Salma and support for the trial.
South Asia
  • Pray for the police, public prosecutors and judges that IJM teams in South Asia work with on a daily basis. Pray that they would understand how to implement the laws against forced labor slavery. Pray that they would also develop compassion for families and children who are held in slavery by violence and fear.
Southeast Asia
  • Please pray for national-level government and law enforcement agencies in the Philippines as they strategize how to fight sex trafficking effectively. Pray that the leaders will designate adequate resources to empower regional and local police to fight the crime.
  • Praise God for the successful completion of the initial phase of the anti-trafficking training for police in the Philippines. Pray that the training will lead to sustainable action and tangible anti-trafficking efforts as IJM and the Philippine National Police continue to develop the program. But I will rescue you on that day; you will not be handed over to those you fear.
— Jeremiah 39:17

Africa
  • Ask God to grant Selene* peace and protection in Zambia. After a ten-year legal battle, Selene was finally declared the rightful owner to her home. When her husband passed away, his family moved in and has been trying to claim her home for the last decade. Please pray that the court’s declaration of truth would bring peace to Selene and her community. (Read more about the “great day for justice.”)
Latin America
  • Pray for wisdom and safety for IJM’s investigators in Bolivia and Guatemala, as they help local authorities locate men suspected of sexually abusing young children. Pray for safety as they search, and pray that the suspects will be arrested and restrained from hurting or intimidating these children.
South Asia
  • Praise God for exciting opportunities to share about anti-trafficking laws and best practices with judges in South Asia. Ask God to grant favor and wisdom to the IJM staff as they share, and pray that these judges will continue to rule with righteousness so that traffickers cannot abuse with impunity.
  • Praise God for a rescue operation last week to free two girls from brothels where they were abused and sold for sex. Pray for the two survivors in their first week of freedom. Pray that they would experience God’s supernatural peace and be able to trust IJM and the social workers who will help them process their trauma. Pray that government authorities would have wisdom as they consider the evidence that exists to keep the suspected traffickers in prison as they await trial.
Southeast Asia
  • Pray for IJM Cambodia as they help search for a trafficker who was convicted in 2011, but is still missing. Pray that this convicted man would be found and required to serve the just prison sentence. Pray that this man would also experience God’s mercy and redemptive power.

  • This week, 30 innocent men, women and boys were declared free after spending time in a Kenyan prison for a crime none of them committed.Jane, a grandmother, was one of the people randomly arrested by police and charged with arson. Although she was imprisoned, she said, “I knew God would help me because I was innocent.” Praise God for answering her cry and for blessing the IJM Kenya team that helped bring freedom to Jane and the others. (Read more about the 30 innocent people set free from prison, including a 16-year-old boy who was at a youth group meeting when he was arrested.)
Latin America
  • Pray that a sex trafficking trial in Bolivia will end soon. This case has been significantly delayed because the citizen judges have failed to show up (citizen judges are similar to American jurors). Praise God that new citizen judges have been appointed and seem committed to the trial. Pray that the court will schedule the hearings quickly, and pray that the citizen judges show up with discernment and integrity.
South Asia
  • Last week we found out that a judge was transferred to a new court in South Asia, creating a huge setback in one of IJM’s sex trafficking cases. Pray that a new judge will be appointed immediately, and pray that the judge will have integrity and training in handling human trafficking cases. The new judge will not have a chance to hear the survivors testify in person. Regardless, pray that the new judge considers all of the evidence, and pray that the suspects on trial will be rightly held accountable according to the law.
Southeast Asia
  • Praise God for a successful training on how to protect children from sexual abuse, hosted by IJM Thailand. About 150 people from the government, hospitals, schools, police and other NGOs attended the training. A new policy with increased protection for children was recently announced in Chiang Mai, and this training was a great opportunity to explain how the policy works. Pray that hundreds of children in the district would be emboldened to seek help and would be protected as a direct result of this training.

  • Praise God that the Attorney General of Guatemala approved and signed new protocols that will ensure child sexual assault cases are handled properly by judges and lawyers in the Public Ministry nationwide! The new protocols on the investigation and prosecution of child sexual assault cases were developed with support from IJM Guatemala and UNICEF, and we have been praying for many months for these best practices to become the national standard. Please pray that the judges and lawyers will be receptive to the training, so that these best practices will be implemented and children will be protected throughout Guatemala.
South Asia
  • Pray for Zeenat,* a sex trafficking survivor who recently helped IJM and police locate a suspected brothel keeper. Her bravery led to the rescue of four more girls who were trapped in that brothel. Ask God to bless Zeenat and the other four girls as they adjust to new lives in freedom. Pray for wisdom and patience for the social workers who are supporting them in these critical first weeks. (Read more about Zeenat’s amazing bravery that led to more rescue.)
  • Please pray for eight clients in South Asia who recently graduated from IJM’s aftercare program for former slaves and have now joined a leadership training class. When families are rescued from slavery, they enter into a comprehensive two-year aftercare program so they can receive the education and empowerment they need to transition into sustainable lives of freedom. These eight clients were selected by their peers in the aftercare program to receive more in-depth training, so that they can become strong advocates for the rights of their entire communities. Ask God to grant these eight courage and strength as they lead their communities.
Southeast Asia
  • Pray for several sex trafficking cases in the Philippines that have stalled despite strong evidence of abuse. Many judges doubt the credibility of a case when there are no witness testimonies from the trafficking survivors themselves. Choosing to participate in a trial is a big decision, and some of these survivors are not at a place in their healing to do so. In other cases, the survivors are no longer living in aftercare homes and do not have the support system they would need to make this decision. Pray that God will make a way where there seems to be no way. Pray that witnesses will boldly step forward so justice prevails. And pray for the judges to make just rulings even without these testimonies.

March 14, 2013 (from IJM Prayer Partners)

See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: …readiness to see justice done.

— 2 Corinthians 7:11

Urgent request from South Asia: tomorrow, two sex trafficking cases are expected to end. Ask God to give the court wisdom so that they make a just ruling. 11 suspects are charged with sex trafficking crimes.
One of the trials started 15 months ago, and three survivors have testified about the horrific abuse they endured inside the brothel. The main suspect in this case is a “kingpin trafficker,” and we’ve asked for prayer in his case many times before. Pray that a fair conviction will send a strong message to the entire red-light district where girls are routinely bought and sold for sex.
Africa
  • Pray for churches in Kigali, Rwanda, as they do justice work in their own communities. Pray that these church leaders and congregations will have discernment and boldness as they take practical steps to protect children in their communities from sexual abuse.
Latin America
  • Pray for Carla,* a client of our Casework Alliance partner Paz y Esperanza in Huánuco, Peru. Carla recently had surgery for injuries she sustained as a result of violent abuse. Pray for God’s peace, and ask him to heal her physically as well as emotionally.
South Asia
  • Pray for an upcoming training on the laws against slavery that IJM staff will lead for nearly 50 law students. Pray for the preparations for this important training, and ask God to move in the students’ hearts so they become passionate advocates against slavery in their own country.
Southeast Asia
  • A few days ago, IJM Thailand and the Department of Social Welfare in Chiang Mai led a training about a new local policy that will protect children from sexual abuse in the district. There were about 150 participants from different sectors of public service in this district, including government officials, hospitals and school staff, police officers and NGO leaders. Pray that this new policy will be implemented so that children who have been abused can get the care and protection they desperately need.
  • Pray for the three IJM offices fighting sex trafficking in the Philippines.Ask God to give the leadership staff wisdom and guidance this week, as they meet with outside consultants and IJM staff from headquarters to develop clear monitoring and evaluation methods. These methods are important to show how IJM’s work is protecting children from sex trafficking.

  • Stand for Freedom events are taking place at more than 500 colleges, churches and communities now through March 15. These events will raise awareness and support to stop modern-day slavery. Ask God to bless these events, so thousands are mobilized to join the movement. (Learn more about Stand for Freedom here.)
  • Please pray for IJM UK as they review applications for their next class of interns. Pray for wisdom in selecting the right candidate for each critical intern position.
  • Pray for two new monitoring and evaluation positions at IJM’s headquarters in Washington, DC: a Capacity Building & Training Specialist, and a Monitoring & Evaluation SpecialistThese critical positions will support IJM’s field offices in developing conceptual and methodological foundations designed to be measurable, successful and sustainable.

Africa
  • Please keep praying for Ramona,* a Ugandan widow and mother of six children who has been kicked off her land and threatened with murder.Last week, the man who destroyed the boundary markers around her land was convicted for doing so. This man is also charged with threatening violence, and another hearing in that criminal trial is scheduled for next week. Ask God to give Ramona safety and perseverance. Pray that the man will be restrained from intimidating or harming her family.
Latin America
  • Ask God for peace and safety for IJM Bolivia’s client Linda.* Her stepfather was charged with sexually assaulting Linda, but last year he was acquitted. Linda recently moved to another town to live with her biological father, because she is afraid of seeing her stepfather again. Pray for the IJM social workers who will need to travel to check in with Linda to continue therapy.
South Asia
  • Praise God that justice was done in two separate sex trafficking cases in South Asia: six traffickers were convicted. In one of the trials, an infamous trafficker was put behind bars and finally restrained after many years of trafficking and abusing dozens of girls. Three brothel keepers were also sentenced to prison in that case. The other trial ended after a tumultuous year — the case had been transferred between four judges and heard in four different courts. Praise God that these traffickers will no long exploit girls for sex, and please pray for the trafficking survivors who continue to heal from the abuse.
Southeast Asia
  • Pray for two young women in Cambodia who were repeatedly raped by two different men. Cambodian police are searching for both men right now. Pray that the suspects will be found and arrested so trials can begin. Pray for IJM social workers as they help the two young women process the trauma they have endured.

  • Pray for two key positions open in the IJM Canada office: Vice President of Development and Marketing, and Student Mobilization Coordinator.Pray that God will direct the right people to apply for these positions, and ask God to grant wisdom and discernment to the IJM Canada team as they consider the candidates.
  • Pray for IJM UK’s Lianna Clarke as she speaks at two youth events this week. Please pray for God’s blessing on the IJM UK team expanding their student ministry through events like these. Ask God to grow a justice movement in the UK by working through the student generation.
  • Please pray for an executive with the tenure and experience required to develop and lead a best-in-class marketing strategy to join IJM as the Vice President of Global Marketing & Services.

Justice will dwell in the desert and righteousness live in the fertile field.
— Isaiah 32:16

Africa
  • Please pray for Ramona,* a Ugandan mother who was forced from her home after her husband passed away. Late last year, IJM Kampala helped the widow and her children return home. But earlier this year, another relative started making astonishing threats of violence against Ramona, promising to kill her children with a machete if she refused to leave. Praise God that this man has been arrested and charged, and please pray that he will be restrained from causing any harm. Ask God to bless Ramona and her children with safety and peace. (Read about the arrest last week, and learn more of Ramona’s story.)
  • Pray for just rulings in two IJM cases in Kenya. In both cases, the suspects are on trial for sexually assaulting young girls, and the judgments are scheduled to be given before the end of February. Please pray for justice, and pray for the girls who continue to heal physically and emotionally.
Latin America
  • Praise God that the Guatemalan Supreme Court approved a set of best practices for the collection and use of victim testimony in child abuse cases. IJM Guatemala helped develop these best practices, and we have been praying for more than a year for all of the Supreme Court judges to approve them. These best practices are now the standard for all child sexual abuse cases throughout Guatemala. Pray for IJM Guatemala as they lead trainings to help courts understand how to meet these standards. Pray that the new standards will ensure children are protected and not subjected to re-traumatization as they give critical evidence in cases of sexual abuse.
South Asia
  • Earlier this month, 92 people rescued nearly two years ago received government-issued checks that they are entitled to as former forced labor slaves. After a rescue operation, government officials grant each person they determine to have been held as a forced laborer a release certificate — an official document that emancipates them from slavery. That release certificate entitles the recipient to a financial benefit from the government — money intended to help them rebuild a life in freedom. But it often takes months, if not years, of persistent advocacy from IJM to make sure these funds are actually delivered to the former slave. Pray that God will give these 92 people wisdom and abundant blessing as they continue to rebuild lives in freedom. (These 92 people were among the more than 500 people rescued from a life of slavery in a single brick factory in May 2011.)
Southeast Asia
  • Pray for IJM Thailand as our team meets with officials in a district where we believe more than 9,000 villagers deserve protection under Thai law. Despite meeting the qualifications for Thai legal status, these villagers are currently stateless — no country claims them. This leaves them very vulnerable to abuse, including trafficking. Pray that the district officials will understand the urgency of the thousands living in their district without real protection. Ask God to bless the IJM team with wisdom and favor as they propose a solution to help the district government process the applications quickly and efficiently.
